If you wear contact lenses, you know they are a vital part of your everyday life. Since they play such an important role in your eye health, why not treat them with a little love and respect? We’ve put together a list of contact lens care tips to maximise the life of your contact lenses. If you respect your contacts, we promise they’ll respect you back!
Wash your hands with warm water and soap
Good eye health hygiene starts with washing your hands. Even if you’re just hanging around the house, dirt and grime are everywhere. The last thing you need is dirt and dust getting in your line of vision. After handwashing, make sure you dry your hands with a clean towel before handling your contact lenses.
Contact lenses are like underwear – don’t overwear them
Continuous use of extended wear contact lenses can increase one’s risk of corneal abrasion or infection. Infection of the cornea can lead to blindness. Overwear can take the form of wearing contact lenses too long in a day, or even in sleeping with lenses on the eye that were not meant to be used in an extended-wear manner. The culprit in overwear is a decrease in the amount of oxygen getting to the cornea from the atmosphere. Improvements in lens materials have greatly increased the amount of oxygen getting through the lens, but even so, some patients have corneas that respond to decreased oxygen sooner than others. If you are concerned you are experiencing symptoms related to overwear, discontinue your contact lens wear and contact your eye health practitioner as soon as possible.
Contact lense solution is your best friend
Don’t do what champion boxer and rugby league legend Anthony Mundine did in 2007 and spit on your contact lenses. He ended up in the hospital with a severe eye infection. Keep a bottle of contact lens solution and a contact lens case with you at all times so you are always prepared. Rinse your contact lenses thoroughly with a sterile solution, such as our Eyedia multipurpose solution, and store them in a fresh disinfecting solution. Topping up an old solution with new is an infection risk. Never use tap water to rinse or store your contact lenses. Water is a common source of potentially damaging microorganisms that can produce sight-threatening infections.
